Kyiv (Kiev) has a continental climate with four very distinct seasons. The best time to visit Kyiv (Kiev) is between April and October when temperatures are generally above freezing. However, if you’re after a winter wonderland getaway, visit between November and March when it can snow heavily at any time.

Spring (March to May) sees temperatures climb from a chilly average of 5°C (41°F) in March to a warm 20°C (68°F) in May. Make sure you head to the M.M. Gryshko National National Botanical Gardens near the Dnieper River in May to see the lilacs in full bloom.

Summer (June to August) in Kyiv (Kiev) can be very hot, but rarely too hot for comfort. Average temperatures in July can reach 25°C (77°F). Due to the warm weather, Kyiv (Kiev) becomes bustling with tourists and locals visiting all of the golden-domed cathedrals and churches in Kyiv (Kiev). Autumn (September to November) in Ukraine’s capital is characterised by the multiple artistic and creative festivals that occur such as the Gogolfest in September and the Molodist International Film Festival in October. If you plan to visit in autumn, be sure to take a jacket with you. October is pleasant, with an average high of 12°C (53.6°F) and low of 4°C (39.2°F).

Winter (December to February) can be frigid in Kyiv (Kiev). The average temperature in January can reach highs of -2°C (28.4°F) and lows of -7°C (19.4°F). However, don’t let the low temperature dissuade you, there are festive events in the city during winter including Orthodox Christmas and New Year’s Day, making the season much more enjoyable.
