Currency information

East Caribbean Dollar (XCD; symbol EC$) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of EC$100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of EC$1, and 25, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents. US Dollars are also accepted.

The East Caribbean Dollar is tied to the US Dollar.

Credit cards

Most businesses accept credit cards, but not all. Both banks have ATMs.

Travellers cheques

Widely accepted. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller's cheques in US Dollars.

Banking hours

Mon-Thurs 0800/0900-1400, Fri 0800-1500, depending on the bank. Banks close at 1300 on Wednesdays.

Currency restrictions

There are no restrictions on importing and exporting local or foreign currency up to EC$27,000 or US$10,000, subject to declarations above this amount.

There are two banks, a credit union and a building society.

Montserrat duty free

Overview

The following goods may be imported into Montserrat by travellers aged 16 and over without incurring customs duty:

• 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 225g of tobacco.
• 1.18L of wine or spirits.
• 177ml of perfume.
• Gifts up to a value of EC$500, including the items above.

You must declare fresh fruit, vegetables and meat for inspection.
