In the quest for the world's best beaches, the WTG team has turned to you, our well-travelled readers, for suggestions.
Facebook fans and Twitter followers have recommended beaches ranging from France’s shores to India’s lagoons. Here are the best of these secret sandy getaways.
Whitehaven Beach, eastern Australia
Facebook fans Annabel Farley and Cara Allan were eager to sing praises of this protected island just off of Queensland. Visitors can swim with sea turtles that sunbathe on the white silica sand. After sunset, the turtles can stick around, but tourists must leave, making Whitehaven a perfect daytrip for natural beauty.
Goa, India
According to Facebook fan Tina Winn, “paradise” is the only word to describe the sand dunes that stretch along the coastline of Goa. This beach has become a refuge for tranquility seekers and a haven for yoga practitioners. The expanse of soft white sand stretches from the rolling dunes to the turquoise Arabian Sea.
Gunyah Beach, South Australia
For the action, fan Julianne Olds Marshall recommends Gunyah Beach, which “you can have to yourself”. Although it’s part of Coffin National Park, there are endless recreational activities such as windsurfing, off-road driving, and kayaking. There is no camping on Guyah beach, making it 16km (10 miles) of unspoiled sand.
Tropea Beach, Italy
For emerald water, ancient Grecian ruins and quaint Italian villages, check out Tropea Beach in Calabria. “It’s an untouched gem!” tweeted follower Door2Tour. According to local lore, Hercules himself founded the seaside city, and Tropea is still known as “the coast of the gods” because of the breathtaking cliffs overlooking the tranquil cove.
La Palmyre Beach, France
For a resort experience, Twitter follower fromLeontine recommends La Palmyre. This beach is famous for its long expanses of sandy shores, the charming port of Bonne-Anse and the forested wildlife preserve area along the coast. The wildlife and stunning sunsets make La Palmyre Beach perfect for long strolls and bike rides.
